Throwback Thursday: Michigan vs Ohio State (11-22-86)

Paying homage to Michigan Basketball's first outright Big Ten championship since the 1985-86 season (see the above photo), we take a look back at another conference winning Michigan squad from that same year.

Going into the '86 finale against the Buckeyes, #6 Michigan stood at 10-1 overall, 6-1 in the Big Ten, but trailed 9-2, 7-0 #7 Ohio State in the conference title race. As was usually case when these two schools met, the winner would take the B1G title and represent the league in the Rose Bowl. Always confident Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh made his feelings well known, guaranteeing a victory against the Buckeyes the week leading up to the game.

The game itself was a classic…maybe one of the best showdowns in this storied rivalry. Ohio State, led by wide receiver phenom Chris Carter and playing at home in front of a raucous crowd, jumped out to an early 14-3 lead. But Michigan hung tough thanks to Jamie Morris' 210-yard rushing effort. Late in the game with a chance to prove Harbaugh wrong, Ohio State missed a 45-yard game-winning field goal, and Schembechler's Wolverines held on for the 26-24 victory.

And oh…two things. First, an impressive 2:10 game intro on the broadcast. As someone who makes their living as a video editor, I can always appreciate a network-produced hype video. And second, how 'bout those classy #SchembechlerStripes on the away jerseys? Love that classic look.
