McGuffie to Rice

We don't post very much on Saturdays (or at all on Saturdays). But I am at home...bored watching the Cardinals-Falcons playoff game...because God knows I haven't watched enough football lately.

Anyways, just doing a little paroosing of the internets, and I see that Sam McGuffie has enrolled, or is about to enroll at Rice. I could go ahead and check to see exactly where Rice is, but I'm not that excited about it, so I'll just assume it's somewhere in Texas.

Rivals says he's also interested, or at least was interested in Houston.
"Rice's administration is really committed to athletics, and I really like it there," he told the site. "I've met all of the coaches, and they are an up-and-coming program."
And Michigan is...chop liver?

Okay, don't answer that. Sorry, I'm a little bitter.

So, there you have it. I fully expect Michigan to be scheduling Rice for their 2010 home opener, where McGuffie will rush for 300 yards and 4 touchdowns.

That is all. Happy Saturday night everyone!

  1. Rice is just as good if not better academically, its the closest FBS school to his house (about 30 minutes, compared to say UHouston which is 45 minutes), and it's turning into a winner where he can play his style of football without as many concussions. This was a great pick for him.

    Hi Kowisja--
Rice is not even close when it comes to academic comparison to Michigan. Sorry.

But I do wish Sam well & I hope he prospers there. He is a fine athlete & was a great asset to Michigan while he was there. I hope he thrives.

  5. Wow, you people who think Michigan can touch Rice in terms of academics are retarded. It's not even close Rice destroys Michigan academically. Rice might as well be an Ivy and Michigan is a huge public state school, and it's not even the best...Virginia, UNC Chapel Hill, Cal, Florida, U Penn (obviously, but that's an Ivy so it doesn't really count) and probably Texas are all better. And I think Boulder is too, but that's just my opinion, I'm sure lots of people would disagree with me there.

P.S. Basically all people involved in the Michigan football program whine like bitches and the only good thing that ever came out of there was Braylon Edwards. And I'm not even anti-Michigan, it's just the way it is. Just be glad no hardcore Michigan haters have read this blog.

  6. Rice "destroys" Michigan academically? So in a National Ranking of the best in 2010 Michigan was 27th and Rice was 17th. That is hardly destroying someone.

When you throw in things like Virginia, which is essentially ranked the same, Florida, which is ranked much lower... and some of the others, then you lose credibility. Follow it up with "it's just my opinion" and now I see why you lost credibility.

Hard to believe your "I'm not even anti-Michigan" statement at this point.

I'd even give those bigger public schools a little extra credit for their rankings because they managed to earn them while serving a much broader audience. The bigger you get the harder it is to maintain tighter controls (and Michigan has nearly 10x the number of undergraduates as Rice)

Now that's just one, reasonably well polished poll. Check other pools (Academic Ranking of World Universities for one the US News rankings linked by the poster above for another) and you'll find they almost universally rank Michigan HIGHER than Rice.

I'd give some in an argument with those polls because some of the things they rank on actually favor the universities size - assuming you have a larger university with some standard of excellence. That seems a bit unfair and a university like Rice won't be able to compete in a poll based on that.

That may be the trouble with ANY of those polls, how they go about ranking the school, what statistics, etc may not be relevant.

In either case, Michigan and Rice both benefit from being relatively selective when it comes to admissions and there are schools that will provide you with a great education that are not as selective and as a result will never rank as highly.

A conclusion to this.. an argument match over academic superiority isn't going to be won by either side, you'll find facts to support your claims one way or the other, but a statement that one is a world ahead of the other is an ignorant statement. Both schools will provide you with a great education if you get in and take advantage of it....

However we were talking about football.

I hope McGuffie enjoys his time and has success at Rice. It would have been interesting to see how he would have thrived at Michigan, but we won't get that opportunity now. I do hope that concussions are not a standard for him in football, it seems that if you are prone to concussions you walk a fine line when it comes to football these days.
